Conservative activist Robby Starbuck has filed a defamation lawsuit against Google after its AI reportedly generated links to false news articles claiming he had committed sexual assault and other crimes.

According to Starbuck, the AI cited several mainstream media outlets—including Rolling Stone, Mediaite Newsweek, the New York Post, Salon, and the Daily Beast—and presented non-existent articles as legitimate sources. In one example, it suggested he had been a “person of interest” in a 1991 murder case while he was two years old at the time.

Starbuck said the AI repeatedly claimed he had been “credibly accused of sexual assault” and made additional false claims, including appearing in Jeffrey Epstein’s flight logs, being suspended by the Daily Wire, engaging in pornographic work, committing business fraud, stalking, participating in the January 6 Capitol riots, and affiliating with the Ku Klux Klan.

He added that he had warned Google about the problem for two years and that some members of the public had seen the AI-generated content and believed it.

A Google spokesperson told the New York Post that the errors were caused by AI “hallucinations.” They added, “Hallucinations are a well-known issue for all LLMs, which we disclose and work hard to minimise. If you’re creative enough, you can prompt a chatbot to say something misleading.”
