Miami, 9 October 2025 – Two Miami police officers were injured in a shooting on Thursday morning in the Allapattah neighbourhood. The incident ended with the death of the suspect, 27-year-old Mason Triana, and led to a prolonged police operation.
Miami Police Chief Manuel Morales said the response began at approximately 7:00 a.m. after officers received a report of an abandoned vehicle at the intersection of NW 15th Avenue and 26th Street. Officers requested a tow truck to remove the vehicle. Shortly afterwards, a ShotSpotter alert, a gunfire detection system, reported gunfire nearby.
When officers returned to investigate, they found a vehicle struck by multiple bullets. Gunfire was directed at the officers. One officer was shot in the knee, and another in the ankle. Both were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital and are in stable condition.
Chief Morales said he visited the officers in hospital and commended their professionalism. “They are incredibly calm. I am proud of the officers for their conduct during this incident,” he said.
After the shooting, Triana barricaded himself inside a nearby residence. Police reported that he exchanged gunfire with multiple officers using an AK-47-style rifle. No other injuries occurred.
After several hours, police used a drone to obtain images inside the residence. Triana was found dead. Authorities have not confirmed whether the gunshot wound was self-inflicted or occurred during the exchange of fire. Morales said, “The suspect had a gunshot wound, but it is unclear whether it was self-inflicted or sustained in the shootout.”
Triana was known to local police because of previous encounters and arrests, but he had no convictions. “Our officers have dealt with him before. There is a history of incidents, but he was never convicted,” Morales said.
A second individual was detained during the operation. Preliminary investigations indicate that this person is Triana’s brother, with whom he had a dispute that may have triggered the incident. Police are investigating the brother’s role. Morales said, “It appears everything began as a domestic episode between brothers related to the abandoned vehicle. We are interviewing him to clarify his involvement.”
The names of the injured officers have not been released. Police said the female officer has 17 years of service and the male sergeant has 16 years. Both are expected to recover fully.
The incident prompted a large police mobilisation in the Allapattah area, including special units and armoured vehicles. Aerial footage showed a secured perimeter around the residence and surrounding areas.
Morales said the officers’ response was exemplary.
The investigation remains open. Authorities are examining the cause of Triana’s death and the family dispute that preceded the confrontation.
