OpenAI has launched an integration of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) into its ChatGPT platform that will enable users to conduct transactions directly within the chatbot’s conversation interface. The development, first reported by The Economic Times, follows an initial pilot programme conducted in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the fintech firm Razorpay.
The trial phase involves banking partners Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank, which are testing how conversational artificial intelligence can securely interact with the country’s real-time payments infrastructure. The initiative is focused on facilitating transactions that remain under the user’s control.
Among the first commercial services to adopt the new feature is BigBasket, the online grocery platform backed by Tata Digital. The integration allows customers to browse products, select items, add them to a virtual cart, and finalise their purchase through the UPI payment system without leaving the ChatGPT environment.
Preeti Jain, Head of Product and Design at BigBasket, was quoted stating, “Integrating our shopping experience with ChatGPT and UPI marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of digital commerce in India. We are empowering customers with a shopping journey that is seamless, intuitive, secure, and includes near-instant delivery, all inside a simple conversation.”
This strategic move is seen as part of OpenAI’s broader effort to deepen its footprint in India, which is considered a key growth market for its artificial intelligence services.
The payments update follows OpenAI’s recent DevDay 2025 conference, where it announced that a range of global platforms—including Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow—are now accessible as integrated services inside ChatGPT.
